Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, today asked the Congress to approve $190 billion in spending for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in 2008. How sad is it that this administration can ask the Congress to fund a war, but threatens to veto an additional $35 billion in funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program which would allow this program to cover an additional 4 million children; bringing the total covered to 10.6 million. For the cost of this idiotic Iraq venture for 2 months, 4 million children could get basic health care.
It seems this administration is more interested building an empire than insuring the welfare of its constituents. I hate to sound hackneyed, but these kids are our future. We need to make sure they have the basic necessities, like health insurance. The Canadians are making us look bad; they have one of the best health care systems in the world, and every citizen is covered. Doesn't that embarrass you?
